Recommended dives off the coast of l'Ametlla de Mar:
CALA LLOBETA:
After leaving Cala Llobeta on Calafat housing estate, you will find a rocky
formation to the right with posidonia growing on it. There is a rock bridge a
few metres away from the bay where you can dive to a depth of 14 metres to a
sandy bottom. Level of difficulty - 1, starting from the beach.
CALAFATÓ:
You will find rocky formations with a multitude of inaccessible cavities and
meadows of posidonia on both sides of the bay. If you follow the cliff to a
depth of 10 metres, you will find the dolphin's cave, a small accessible cavity
where someone left a 50 cm long bronze dolphin. Level of difficulty: 1 starting
from the beach.
SANT JORDI:
You can dive to a depth of 1 metre from Sant Jordi beach where you will find a
multitude of inaccessible cavities in a rocky formation which is not very
prominent. You can also choose to follow the small cliff which forms the
headland where the XI th century fortification giving its name to the area is
situated. You will find a sandy bottom and a rocky wall which has multiple
cavities, two of which are accessible. The maximum depth is 9 metres. Level of
difficulty 1- starting from the beach. Ideal for night dives.
CALA VIDRE:
You can choose to follow Sant Jordi headland and do the same dive as before,
but choose to start either from Cala Vidre or go south to Calaforn where the
water is shallow but there are many interesting rocky formations with cavities,
two of which are accessible. The first is on the right of the bay and the
second in the small cove next to it. Level of difficulty 1- starting from the
beach. Ideal for night dives.
PUNTA GALERA:
This is at the end of the street which has the same name in 3 Calas housing
estate. You can start to dive from Cala Bufador to Cala Mosques. You will find
a meadow of posidonia if you follow the cliff, you will find a tunnel which is
accessible from both ends. You can finish the dive in Cala Mosques or go on to
Torrent del Pi. Level of difficulty 1- leaving from the beach.
TORRENT DEL PI:
You can find a multitude of rocky formations with inaccessible cavities and
posidonia in front of this bay. Level of difficulty 1- leaving from the beach
but the use of a boat or canoe is advisable.
PASEO MARÍTIMO:
You can leave from Pixavaques beach and continue along the edge of the
posidonia meadow, then you can either choose to dive to a depth of 13 metres or
continue along the coast in shallow water and admire diverse rocky formations
until you reach l'Alguer beach. Level of difficulty 1- starting from the beach.
ROMPEOLAS:
If you follow the harbour wall you can enjoy exploring the multiple
inaccessible cavities which are formed by the rocks it is made of. Start in
either Cala l'Alguer or at the end of the wall where the depth of the water is
11 metres. Level of difficulty 1- starting from the beach.
CALA PEPO:
Starting from the bay behind the Yacht Club going south it is difficult to find
depth in the water, but you can reach 11 metres. You will find a rocky bar with
accessible openings in the form of an aquaduct. Level of difficulty 1- starting
from the beach.
CALA BON CAPÓ:
You will find rocky formations with several passages and inaccessible cavities.
If you continue south along the coast, you will find sand banks and posidonia.
Level of difficulty 1- leaving from the beach.
L'ESTANY:
A natural harbour with a stony beach which has small rocky formations
alternating with large boulders. If you go towards Bon Capó you can find some
accessible cavities in shallow water. Level of difficulty 1- leaving from the
beach.
SHIP-WRECKS:
Due to the renovation of the fishing fleet some boats have been sunk off the
coast at a depth of 20-30 metres. Some of them are of considerable dimension,
an example of which is a 25-metre-long tuna fishing boat. Level of difficulty 1
or 2 depending on the wreck, starting from a boat.
CAVOUR:
What may be the most attractive shipwreck off the Catalan coast is found in
front of Calafat. It is an Italian merchant vessel 100 metres in length and 20
metres in breadth commonly known as "El Correu". It sank in 1917 and rests in a
muddy bottom at a depth of 53 metres on the bottom and 42 metres on its deck.
Although it was stripped in the middle of the last century, its remains form an
impressive artificial reef. There is still a cannon in its stern that was never
used against the German submarine which sank it. Level of difficulty 3- leaving
from a boat.
